OUTLINE
The newly established Nishiguchi Plasterworks Showroom in Ritto City, Shiga Prefecture, was conceived as a space for redefining the traditional craft of plasterwork and opening up its social and spatial potential. I was responsible for the overall planning and context design, focusing on the cultural layers inherent in the act and materiality of plaster, and developing a spatial concept that connects its essence to the present day.
Architect Fumihiko Sano was invited to lead the architectural design, engaging with the textures and meanings of materials from a craft-oriented perspective. With careful attention to the resonance between the act of plastering and the selected materials, Sano realized a design in which thought and matter permeate the entirety of the architecture—from its structural framework down to the smallest details.
Through this collaboration, the showroom was born as a space where architecture and art, material and thought intersect. I also directed and produced the artworks installed within the interior, creating a multilayered spatial experience in which structure, symbolism, and environment are intricately interwoven.
This showroom marks the first step of a new “platform for plasterwork”, where the craftsmanship of artisans and contemporary creativity resonate with one another.
