Opening Exhibition at Nishiguchi Plastering Showroom “Sakan / Ukan”

OUTLINE

The opening exhibition “Sakan / Ukan” was conceived and held at the newly opened showroom of Nishiguchi Plastering in Ritto City, Shiga Prefecture.
The exhibition featured works by architect and contemporary artist Fumihiko Sano, who designed the showroom, and contemporary artist Eikoh Tanaka, who had been engaged in concept design and planning since the early stages of the project.

By intersecting the craft of plastering with the practices of architecture and art, the exhibition illuminated the sculptural and spatial potential of “earth” and “walls” as materials.

Nishiguchi Plastering is a collective of skilled artisans who have long provided high-quality plaster finishes for a wide range of projects, from commercial facilities to residences, through masterful trowel work. The new showroom was envisioned as a platform to pioneer new horizons in plaster expression, built upon accumulated craftsmanship and knowledge, while fostering collaboration with architects, artists, and designers.

On the opening day, a gallery talk was held with Fumihiko Sano, Eikoh Tanaka, and Tetsushi Nishiguchi, CEO of Nishiguchi Plastering Co., Ltd. The discussion offered valuable insights into expanding plastering from a “technique” into an “expression,” and explored its intersections with art and architecture.
